Realistic Expectations for Your Travel Budget

It's important to be realistic about your travel budget when visiting Paris. Although some travelers believe they can get by on a shoestring budget, most people aren't comfortable with that type of travel. Consider what you enjoy on vacation and how you've traveled in the past. Do you like staying in resorts, hotels, vacation rentals, or hostels? Are dining out and visiting attractions a priority? Your preferences will affect your overall budget and itinerary.

What Defines a Budget Traveler?

You might consider yourself a budget traveler, but if you're not ready to give up some comforts, prepare to spend a lot more than the $107 per day that younger budget travelers manage.

Backpackers will usually stick to this shoestring budget by staying in hostel dorms, dining at the cheapest spots such as fast food places, using public transit, and mostly visiting free attractions.

Luckily, Paris has plenty of hostels like St Christopher's Inn Canal, FIAP Paris, and Caulaincourt Montmartre by Hiphophostels. At these hostels, you can find affordable dorm beds and a vibrant social scene, but amenities tend to be quite limited. Additionally, the city has great public transportation options, helping budget travelers save on expensive taxi or Uber costs. The culinary scene is a major highlight for those visiting Paris, but budget travelers often eat street food or cook for themselves in hostels, which can mean missing out on delicious local dishes.

So, are you average?

If you're a couple or family taking a fun trip, you'll probably prefer a mid-range hotel, enjoy meals at favorite restaurants, and visit the main museums and attractions that require entry fees. When visiting Paris, you'll want to see the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, or the Arc de Triomphe. Most activities have costs involved. Thus, it's realistic to expect your daily budget to be closer to $286 per person, per day.

Paris boasts a wide array of hotels and vacation rentals. When traveling with others, you can share accommodations with a partner, friend, or children, thus reducing your expenses. Families should prioritize hotels and restaurants that are geared toward kids. Hotel Saint Germain Des Pres is an excellent family-friendly option, while La Maison de Lea Paris is also superb. You can find additional family and couple-friendly hotels in our hotel guide for Paris here.

Want to Experience a Luxurious Trip?

If your ideal trip includes every luxury and top-tier service, be ready to budget around $815 per day. A stay at nicer hotels, meals at prestigious restaurants, fancy excursions, and getting around the city with taxis or private drivers will cost you more. Many high-end visitors also prefer unique experiences such as Paris City Center Guided Walking Tour - Semi-Private 12ppl Max - offered by Viator.

Accommodation Budget in Paris

Prices for hotels in Paris vary widely, with luxury hotels charging more due to higher amenities. In the off-season, expect to pay around $126, but during peak summer season, average prices climb to $235. With options ranging from $80 to $442, there's something for every budget. Hostels are usually cheaper, especially dorm rooms. To save, book during the off-season or keep an eye out for special deals.

Tips to Save Money on Accommodation in Paris

Paris is a significant city, providing travelers with diverse accommodation options. Whether you opt for a hostel like St Christopher's Inn Canal, a vacation rental, or a luxurious hotel, there's something for everyone. Prices tend to be higher in the city center, but you'll have convenient access to public transit and attractions.

Thanks to Paris's great public transportation, you can stay outside the city for cheaper accommodations, but be aware of the potential for increased transportation costs and commute time.

When visiting Paris with your family, look for an apartment or accommodation that offers more space to keep everyone comfortable. Since it's a large city, rooms tend to be smaller and a bit tight on space.

If your visit to Paris lasts a week or longer, staying in a vacation rental with a kitchen might make sense for preparing your own meals.

If you plan your trip outside of summer and during the low or shoulder season, you'll find better accommodation rates and fewer tourists.

Many people love to walk around Paris, so you'll want to choose accommodation in a central area. However, this can mean a higher price point.

Food in Paris

Food & Dining Tips

One way to save money is to eat at nicer restaurants for lunch rather than dinner. Numerous restaurants in tourist spots or business zones offer lunch specials or a 'menu of the day.' These options are typically smaller and less expensive versions of their dinner menus. If you explore the right places, you might score a full multi-course gourmet meal at a budget-friendly price. Afterward, simply have a light dinner.

When eating out with children, look for places that provide a kids' menu. This can help you save a significant amount since those meals are typically priced lower. Be aware that some restaurants may not list the kids' options, so it's wise to inquire with your waiter beforehand.

Many accommodations throw in breakfast at no extra cost, though others might charge you for it. The price and quality can greatly vary by hotel. Knowing this in advance can help you figure out if you need to spend more money. You might find the hotel's buffet is worth it, or you may prefer to grab a cheaper bite at a local bakery or cafe.

Pack a picnic to save cash and enjoy the views. Find a local grocery store or market, gather some fresh food, and head to a nice park or beautiful location for your meal.

Keep a water bottle handy instead of purchasing drinks everywhere. It's also better for the environment.

Before you head out on a tour, be sure to find out which meals are included. You could end up paying for some meals out of pocket, which can impact your budget.

If you're looking to experience the culinary culture in Paris, taking a food tour or cooking class is a terrific way to do it. After all, cuisine is one of the reasons why so many people visit. Some of the best food-related activities here include:
