Realistic Expectations for Your Travel Budget

Having a realistic perspective on your travel budget is very important. While many like to think of themselves as "budget" travelers, most people are not prepared for the discomfort and lack of amenities that come with traveling on a shoestring budget. Consider what you really love about travel and thinkg about your previous travel experiences. Are you more inclined to stay in hostels, or do you prefer more comfortable hotels, resorts, or vacation rentals? Is dining out a priority for you? Do you want to visit the major sights and attractions? Your answers to these questions will shape your overall travel budget significantly.

What Does It Mean to Be a Budget Traveler?

Many travelers hear that exploring Slovenia can be done for $50 a day, but if you want to keep some comforts, expect to pay a lot more.

Backpackers might find a way to travel around on that tight budget, but that usually means dorm stays in hostels, eating at budget-friendly restaurants or fast food places, using public transport or walking, and focusing on free attractions.

Fortunately, Slovenia has a significant number of hostels, especially in Ljubljana, Bled, and Maribor.

Do You Identify as an Average Traveler?

Couples or families on vacation will probably choose mid-range hotels, popular dining spots, and visits to major museums and attractions that charge entry fees. Most visitors to Slovenia will want to visit the major attractions, sights, and landmarks. Since most activities have a cost, you should realisticly plan for your budget to be closer to $118 per person, per day.

Slovenia has tons of hotels and vacation rentals available. If you're traveling with a group or family, sharing accommodations with a partner, friend, or your family will cut back on the daily per-person budget. Popular family-friendly destinations like offer hotels and restaurants that cater specifically to kids. For a family-friendly stay, consider ECO Boutique Hotel AMS Beagle in Spodnje Gorje or Hotel Miklic in Kranjska Gora. If you're a couple visiting Kranjska Gora, consider staying at Vila Triglav for a romantic getaway. You can discover more family and couples options in our hotel guide for Slovenia here.

Seeking a Stylish Getaway from the Daily Routine?

If you're planning a vacation with all the finer things in life, prepare for a budget that can reach $250 per day. If you want upscale hotels, world-class dining, premium excursions, and private drivers, this will put you firmly in the "luxury" category. Some of the more high-priced destinations include Ljubljana and Bled. Another option would be to splurge on a multi-day high-end tour that takes care of everything for you, such as Slovenia, Hiking & Gourmet Holiday - 8 days 7 nights - offered by Nature Trips.

Local Transportation Tips

Slovenia has an excellent train system that will connect you to almost everywhere in the country. The prices are reasonable and the rides are comfortable and fast. Long distance and regional buses can fill in when the rail lines don't reach your destination.

In Slovenia, public transit options are somewhat limited in many cities, especially if you're not heading to the biggest cities. It's advisable to rent a car or arrange for a form of transportation in advance, such as a guided tour. However, keep in mind that this might affect your overall trip budget.

If your plans include a trip to the countryside, you'll probably want to rent a car. Remember that the usual vehicle in Europe is equipped with a manual transmission, and choosing an automatic will likely increase the cost. Be sure to book in advance, as the more economical choices can disappear quickly.

If you have a car while staying in a larger city, it's wise to confirm the parking arrangements with your hotel before arrival. You may incur parking fees at the hotel or in a nearby garage. Sometimes, parking further from the city center can be a more cost-effective option.

You can find some excellent pizza throughout the country, but you can also find dishes that are similar to those found in Hungary or the Balkans. Main course dishes are often cutlets that are served with a variety of side dishes. The food is quite good, unless you're a vegetarian. Finding dishes that don't use meat can be challenging.

Kraski prsut: This is a dried ham product that can be compared to Italian prosciutto. It is generally less salty and dry than most cured ham products and therefore has a more mild and gentle flavor.

Food & Dining Tips

If you're traveling with kids, be sure to seek out restaurants that offer a kids' menu. This can help you save quite a bit of money, as these meals are usually priced much lower. Some places may not display the kids' options, so it's a good idea to ask the waiter before placing your order.

A lot of hotels feature breakfast in their room rates, although some charge separately for it. Breakfast quality and prices can vary widely from one hotel to another. Understanding this beforehand can help you figure out if the hotel buffet is worth the splurge or if a local bakery or café would be a more economical choice.

Choose to take a water bottle with you instead of purchasing drinks all the time. It's also beneficial for the planet.

Before taking off on a tour, check which meals are part of the package. If you have to pay for some meals on your own, that could lead to higher costs.

Traveling in Slovenia
Slovenia Bled, Slovenia

Slovenia is in Eastern Europe and is also in the eastern portion of the Alps. The landscape is beautiful and varied. Within this small country you can visit gorgeous Mediterranean coasts that run along the Adriatic Sea, wonderful peaks in the Julian Alps, and rolling hills in the middle of the country.

Slovenia clings tightly to its culture, making it a wonderful place to visit where you can experience a different and unique part of Europe. Parts of the countryside actually appear quite similar to the neighboring Austria, but the culture and the people are strikingly different. As you drive down the street you'll pass by beautiful shrines and striking baroque steeples. The cities offer much to do in the way of sights. The capital, Ljubljana, has been likened to Prague, but to truly experience the country head into its untouched wilderness. The dramatic mountains offer activities for wildlife lovers, hikers, and adventure sport enthusiasts. To truly experience Slovenia, you must step outside the cities into the unparalleled nature it offers. This is really a country for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're interested in rock climbing or trekking, there are plenty of places for you to explore.

Because Slovenia is so small in size, it is relatively easy to travel around. Trips are generally short and fast, but in recent years there has been a decline in public transportation. Car ownership has been on the rise in the country and as result many bus schedules have be greatly reduced. It's best to look at a schedule ahead of time in order to plan your trip, particularly if you're traveling on the weekend.

Slovenia is quite cheap compared to the nearby Switzerland, Austria, and Italy, but it's more expensive than most countries in Eastern Europe. In particular, the capital city of Ljubljana can cost dramatically more than the surrounding countryside and small towns. One option to save money is to stock up on supplies and foods in a large, major supermarkets. These prices are often less than the smaller markets you'll find around town.

At A Glance
  • Slovenia is well connected to Italy and there are frequent buses that travel between various cities in the two countries. Depending on which city is serving as your departure point, and where you hope to arrive, you should find plenty of connections. It is more convenient to make the trip on a weekday when buses are generally more frequent and the ride is more efficient.

  • If you are driving a personal car or rental vehicle you will be required to pay a road tax. Any vehicles that are caught on the roadways without having paid the tax will be fined heavily. You can pay the tax at the border when you arrive. The border guards are suppose to provide you with the necessary information so that you understand the fee you are required to pay. They do not always do this, so make a point of asking if things are unclear to you.

  • Because more residents now own their own vehicles, public transportation in this small country is slipping. You should find rides on weekdays between most towns, but on weekends it can be more challenging. Sundays are particularly slow for public transportation. Try to plan your travel days around the weekends and you should have a much smoother trip.

  • Vegetarian food is limited in the country, but you can find salads on most restaurant menus. In larger cities a good vegetarian option is Mediterranean falafel. Outside of the cities your best option might be to go to a mini mart or supermarket where you can find some good meatless food options.

  • A fun way to experience the Slovenian countryside is to stay at a tourist farm. You'll have the opportunity to experience all kinds of traditional activities and dine on some delicious food.
