Realistic Expectations for Your Travel Budget

It's important to be realistic about your budget for Rouen. Many assume they can visit on a shoestring, but most travelers find that to be very challenging. Think about what matters to you when traveling. Is it staying in a resort, visiting all the attractions, or dining out at nice restaurants? These factors will determine how much you spend on your trip.

The Truth on Budget Travel

You might think that you're a budget traveler. But unless you're willing to eliminate a lot of comforts from your trip, prepare to spend a lot more than the daily average of $64 that backpackers often get by on.

In addition, the city features a fantastic public transit system that helps budget-conscious travelers steer clear of pricey taxi or Uber rides. While food is a highlight for many in Rouen, budget travelers often resort to street food or self-catering in hostels, which can lead to missed opportunities for savoring the local cuisine.

Traveling in Rouen
Rouen Rouen, France

Rouen is a city on the River Seine in the north of France. It is the capital of the region of Normandy. It was formerly one of the largest and most prosperous cities of Medieval Europe. The city has had a turbulent history. It was devastated by fire and plague several times during the Middle Ages, and was occupied by the English during the Hundred Years War. The young French heroine Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc) was tried for heresy and burned at the stake in the central square in 1431. And during WWII, Allied bombing raids laid waste to large parts of the city, especially south of the cathedral.

Rouen was also home to the French Grand Prix, hosting the race at the nearby Rouen-Les-Essarts track sporadically between 1952 and 1968. In 1999 Rouen authorities demolished the grandstands and other remnants of Rouen's racing past. Today, little remains beyond the public roads that formed the circuit. With its extensive history, towering Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life, Rouen is one of Normandy's most engaging destinations. The town is classified as a "City of Art and History" and has more than 200 protected sites.

Neighborhoods & Around

The old town or old center is the main neighborhood area in Rouen. This is where most of the attractions and cultural sites can be found. Wandering around the old centre of Rouen you will discover fabulous half timbered buildings on almost every street. Start your visit to the old town in the Place du Vieux-Marche: beautiful and filled with tourists now, this was actually the square where Joan of Arc was burned to death for heresy. There are some more particularly impressive examples of medieval houses around the Church and Cemetery of Saint-Maclou and around the Church of Saint-Joan, and in Rue Saint-Romain and Rue Eau-de-Robec.
