Realistic Expectations for Your Travel Budget

Having realistic expectations for your budget when visiting Oxford is important. While it's tempting to aim for a shoestring budget, most travelers don't find that style of travel to be enjoyable. Think about your priorities and how you've traveled in the past. Do you prefer staying in budget accommodations or enjoying more luxurious options? Do you like to explore attractions and dine out at local restaurants? These choices will influence your travel costs and itinerary.

Who Exactly is a Budget Traveler?

You might consider yourself a budget traveler, but if you're not ready to give up some comforts, prepare to spend a lot more than the $92 per day that younger budget travelers manage.

Backpackers will usually stick to this shoestring budget by staying in hostel dorms, dining at the cheapest spots such as fast food places, using public transit, and mostly visiting free attractions.

Fortunately, Oxford has plenty of hostels such as Central Backpackers. At hostels like these, you can find cheap accommodation in a dorm as well as a social atmosphere, but with very little amenities.

Is Your Travel Style Average?

If you're traveling for leisure as a couple or family, you'll probably prefer a mid-range hotel, dine at well-known restaurants, and explore the major museums and attractions that charge entry fees. Those traveling to Oxford often aim to see the major attractions, museums, and noteworthy landmarks. Remember, most activities come with a cost. Therefore, it's reasonable to anticipate that your daily budget will be around $209 per person, per day.

Oxford boasts a wide array of hotels and vacation rentals. When traveling with others, you can share accommodations with a partner, friend, or children, thus reducing your expenses. Families should prioritize hotels and restaurants that are geared toward kids. The Old Bank Oxford is an excellent family-friendly option, while Old Parsonage Hotel is also superb. You can find additional family and couple-friendly hotels in our hotel guide for Oxford here.

Want to Experience a Luxurious Trip?

If you envision a trip that covers everything with high-end amenities and top-tier service, be ready for a daily expense near $387. Enjoying nicer hotels, dining at acclaimed restaurants, participating in extravagant activities, and using taxis or private drivers to navigate the college town will require a premium budget. Many high-end visitors also prefer unique experiences such as Private Cotswold Village Tour - 4th & 5th guest travel FREE - offered by Viator.

One of its landmark buildings is the Bodleian Library, the University's main research library and one of the oldest in Europe, having opened in 1602 with the collection of Thomas Bodley. Other University landmarks include the Hertford Bridge or "Bridge of Sighs" (a pedestrian bridge for the use of Hertford College students), the Sheldonian Theatre (iconic for its collection of busts surrounding the building), the Taylorian Institute (for the study of European languages), and the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. Some of the best views of Oxford can be seen from the 13th-century tower of the church.

One of the best-known is perhaps Christ Church, especially due to its associations with Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, as well as its use as a film location for the first Harry Potter film. Other notable Oxford colleges include Magdalen College, Exeter College, New College, the Queens' College, All Souls, Worcester College, Lincoln College, and University College-all unique and admirable in architecture ranging from 18th Classical style to Victorian Neo-Gothic.

In addition to sightseeing and admiring the medieval architecture of the colleges and churches of Oxford University, the city also features a number of important museums. The Ashmolean Museum is one of the most impressive, and one of Britain's oldest public museums, opening in 1683. Collections from the museum feature ancient art and artifacts from Egypt, the Near East, Greece, and Rome, as well as Western examples and a vast Eastern Art exhibit. A few other museums include the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, the Pitt Rivers Museum, and the Christ Church Picture Gallery.

Oxford also features plenty of green spaces with a number of Oxford University Parks located mostly along the River Cherwell, as well as the University of Oxford Botanical Gardens-Britain's oldest, with both indoor and outdoor plants from around the world.

Additional activities can be found in a variety of tours from touring specific university colleges to walking tours around the city as a whole to a number of ghost tours-all of which give different perspectives on the history and architecture of Oxford.
