Realistic Expectations for Your Travel Budget
It's important to set realistic expectations for your travel budget in Fez. While many think they can cut costs for many things, the reality is that most people won't enjoy such a low-budget experience. Consider your preferences and travel style. Do you like resorts, hotels, vacation rentals, or hostels? Are activities and dining out a big part of your travel plans? Your answers will shape your budget and itinerary.
Who are Budget Travelers?
While you might think you're a budget traveler, without giving up many of your usual comforts, you'll likely need to spend more than the $36 per day that backpackers often spend.
Backpackers often work within this tight budget by staying in hostel dorms, eating fast food or street food, using public transit, and mainly visiting free attractions.
Fortunately, you can find plenty of hostels in Fez, including Funky Fes, BackHome Fez, and Riad Verus. These hostels offer inexpensive dorm lodging and a lively social scene, but amenities are often minimal. The culinary scene is also a highlight for everyone in Fez, but budget travelers tend to eat street food or make their own meals in hostels, potentially missing out on the rich flavors of the local cuisine.
Could You Be an Average Traveler?
If you're a couple or a family on a fun getaway, you might want to choose a mid-range hotel, enjoy meals at well-liked restaurants, and visit the key museums and attractions that come with entry fees. It's common for visitors to Fez to seek out the major attractions, museums, and significant landmarks. Most activities are not free, after all. Therefore, it's realistic to plan on a daily budget of about $87 per person, per day.
There's a wide selection of hotels and vacation rentals in Fez. If you're traveling with others, sharing a hotel room with a partner, friend, or kids will help split costs and save money. When traveling as a family, look for hotels and restaurants that welcome children. Ryad Salama is a great choice for kids, and Dar Hafsa is another wonderful option. For more family and couple-friendly places to stay, check out our Fez hotel costs guide.
Want to Escape the Daily Grind in Style?
If you're looking for a high-end escape with every amenity and high-quality service, be prepared for daily expenses around $194. Staying in upscale hotels, enjoying meals at award-winning restaurants, indulging in lavish excursions, and utilizing taxis or private drivers in the city will entail a more premium price tag. Also, higher-end tours are common with luxury travelers, such as Fes to Middle Atlas Private Day Trip - offered by Viator.
Accommodation Budget in Fez
In Fez, hotel prices can be quite surprising. Higher-end hotels offer more amenities and luxury, but come at a higher price tag, especially during the peak winter season. Off-season prices average around $49, but in peak season, they can average around $91. Prices generally range from $23 to $175, and hostels remain the cheaper option. Booking early or traveling during the low season can save you money, and you might find special deals along the way.

Many travelers like to navigate Fez on foot which can save on transportation costs. So, you'll want to stay in a more central location. This could mean higher hotels prices, though.
The city's captivating old town is a big magnet for tourists. While accommodations in this area can be more expensive, they often have a unique charm and easy access to everything you need.
Transportation Budget in Fez
Fez lacks an efficient public transit system. There's a basic public transportation system with buses and a train station, but you'll likely need to take taxis if you can't walk to a destination. Taxis are affordable and abundant.
If you love to explore on foot, you'll really enjoy your time here. The medina can be explored on foot, but it's easy to get lost so allow a lot of time. There are several walking routes through the medina that are marked with colors but you'll likely find yourself wandering on and off the routes as you explore. Outside of the medina, you'll likely want to take a taxi.

Traveling in Fez
Fez
Fez is the historical capital of Morocco and has one of the country's most impressive and elaborate medinas. It's authentic and traditional atmosphere attracts travelers from all over the world. It's fun to wander the city's elaborate alleyways, sample the food, and soak up the sights and smells. In Fez's medina you'll find donkeys, carts, spices, and pottery. You'll find traditional foods, locals bartering for goods, and religious buildings that date back hundreds of years. The medina is also the world's largest car free urban zone.
Fez is located near the Atlas Mountains and has a Mediterranean climate. Winters can be cool and rainy while summers are hot and dry. Winter highs are typically in the high 50s Fahrenheit and summer highs can climb into the high 90s.
Neighborhoods & Around
Fez has three main areas - Fez el-Bali (the Medina), Fez el-Jdid, and Ville Nouvelle (New Town). The medina is easily entered by the main gate of Bab Bou Jeloud on the western side. Fez el-Jdid is similar to the medina in that it has many tiny shops and markets, but the streets are much wider and the atmosphere is slightly different. The main sight in this neighborhood is the Royal Palace and the 14th century mellah, or Jewish Quarter. Ville Nouvelle is west of the medina. This area was built by the French and has large central squares, wide tree-lined streets, and busy cafes. There are many university students in the area and the shops are modern and contemporary.
It can be difficult to find affordable accommodation inside the medina, but if possible, persevere. You'll appreciate the convenient location and enjoy the evening ambiance that staying inside the medina offers. If not, stay just outside the gate for easy access at a lower price.
