Toulon is one of the French Riviera's most popular cities. Though home to one of the continent's best rugby teams, sport is not the only attraction here. Indeed, its old town is thriving, with typical Provence flea markets and ancient fountains adorning its streets. The city also has one of Europe's largest military ports, serving both as the Mediterranean base for the whole of the country's navy and as a departure point for cruises to Sardinia and Corsica. You don't have to travel, however, to experience exceptional beaches, with the Morillon quarter a 20 hectare area of stunning coastlines, from which watersports excursions can be easily organized in the summer months. The city is served by lots of excellent budget hotels, many of which are just a stone's throw from its main sites. Some such options can be found below.

Just 300 meters from Toulon's train station, and close to the beautiful Place Liberte, this characterful hotel is something a little bit different. Though the hotel has been recently renovated, some of the original features (including shutters and built-in wardrobes) remain. The new decoration is quirky and makes you feel right at home regardless of where you're from, with different themes on every floor, each one focusing on a different continent.

The hotel is fully air-conditioned and provides free Wi-Fi in all rooms. Rooms are cited as being large, especially given their price, and with spotless, well-equipped bathrooms attached. Some rooms are also equipped with flat-screen televisions and balconies. Breakfast is also available for just 7 euros. Staff are very friendly, happy to interact in English, but equally so if you want to practice your French!

This hotel has 29 comfortable, soundproof rooms, all with televisions and private en-suites. Breakfast is available from early until 10:30am for just 7 euros a day, and is popular amongst reviewers. The hotel is directly opposite the SNCF train station, the car park of which is available to all guests at a reduced rate. The hotel is also very close to the city's main sites, including the old town, the port and the arsenal.

With the feel of a family-run hotel rather than that of a chain, this would be suitable for holidays, tourism or even business stays. Rooms are basic, but equipped with everything you need and more, with Wi-Fi available in every room, and beach towels, cots and "boules de petanque" (a French game) all at your disposal.
